Frank Hurley presentation

Sue and I went to The NSW Library to see a presentation on the photographic work of Frank Hurley as he recorded the unsuccessful voyage of Shackleton and The Endurance - they got stuck on the ice in Antarctica and had to make their own way home.  Shackleton's extraordinary leadership ensured that every single member of the expedition got out alive.

I was mesmerised by the quality of the photography.  Mind blowing to think it was all done in the early 1900's with the limited and cumbersome cameras of the time.  Hurley made the whole thing come alive through photos, and without him, the heroic efforts would have been largely lost in history. Instead, it's a story that is famous and inspiring 100 years later.
